Part 164: Episode 5, Final Day, Trial Latter 2: Chekhov's Law

I was wondering if the only point of us getting this book was to find the picture in it, but I'm glad all the talk about evidence law is finally paying off.

What's this?
Sound: Realization

I've done my homework too, Chief.

Sound: Desk Slam

However!

What?
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

quote:

Getting this one wrong:

Music: Silence

It seems...

your very existence is "illegal."

Huh...?
Sound: Light Bulb

You've lost it, Wright. All this time I thought you were using the Chief's

knowledge of the law to trap him. It looks like you're the one who got trapped.

I guess

I should just stick to what I'm used to.
Sound: Realization

I never expected to hear that coming from a defense attorney.
Sound: Damage 2

There's the penalty...

Music: Suspense

(Gant's a pro at slipping through loopholes in the law...)

(Still the law's the only weapon)

(I can use to beat him!)

Sound: Gavel

Very well.

Let us settle this once and for all.

Earlier you refused to present evidence.

If you can prove your conduct was not in violation of the law, then do so now!

And we're back at the evidence prompt for another try.

Music: Investigation - Core

...!

I found this piece of evidence myself...

inside your safe.

Sound: Light Bulb

And here is the crux of the matter.

between the cloth and the SL-9 Incident.
Sound: Realization

What!? What kind of nonsense
Sound: Damage 2

is this!?
Sound: Whack

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Realization

Lana showed the picture when it was first entered into the Court Record, but I guess that doesn't count? After that, we didn't present it until after we'd been asked if we had any conclusive evidence to show.

That was shown

only a few moments ago!
Sound: Light Bulb

No...

He's right.

At the beginning of today's trial,

The elegance of this plan hinges on Phoenix's exact wording the first time he refused to show the cloth: "I don't have any evidence I can present at this point in time." Meaning, he does have evidence, but he can't show it! I take back my snark on that flashback last update, it was a good way to foreshadow/hint at this point and I missed it both when the line was originally said and in the flashback.

The person who gave it value as evidence...

Sound: Realization

Gant gave us the timeline we'd only been guessing at, with regard to when exactly the piece of cloth was cut out of the vest. It could have been weeks earlier for all we knew at the time, or from a different vest entirely!

...!

You yourself confessed to a certain "truth."

Sound: Wipe

On the day of the crime,

Oh, yes!

as conclusive evidence.

Sound: Desk Slam

The only person who could have cut this from the victim's vest...

The clapping gets so fast here I can't even capture it properly...

Sound: Guilty x 3 + Fast Clapping x 3

Now that is an epic breakdown. I didn't even notice that Gant's song had started up until all the noise died down there. What I tried to show there didn't really do that scene any justice, so here's a video in all its glory instead.

Sound: Wipe

Well, your crime wasn't exactly petty.

He wanted to reinvestigate the case.

Detective Goodman?
Sound: Light Bulb

Yeah,

that's right.

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Gunshot 4

Please, you've got to help me!
Sound: Gunshot 4

Still, Jake Marshall didn't know when to quit.

Goodman came to me that day.

I went with him to the evidence room.

Then all of a sudden he decided to speak out!

Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident

Can you please reopen the investigation, Chief?

quote:

Original line: "He... told me to open up the evidence room and take it out." Good edit, the original line doesn't really make sense and distracts from the scene. Kind of like what I'm doing now.

Goodman would still be alive if he'd just agreed to help Jake Marshall in the first place. Gant never would have been in the evidence room if Marshall hadn't stolen his ID.

I had a bad feeling when he came to see me, but I never thought he'd bring up SL-9.

Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Sound: Stab 2

I couldn't just pull it out.

Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident

quote:

Original line: "You would only increase the amount of blood and you couldn't finish what you started." Also doesn't really make sense. There were more than two lines in this scene that changed like this, but I only showed the two biggest changes. Kind of a rough first translation here I guess?

Even so, the blood was just pouring out.

I was worrying so much about the floor,

I didn't realize my fatal mistake.
Sound: Whack + Clapping

Sound: Realization

That handprint proved that Goodman was stabbed in the evidence room before Meekins put the Blue Badger in there.

I used to be known as the "crime computer"...

Sound: Whack + Clapping

I had no business doing any of it.

Then you put the body in my car?

Sound: Light Bulb

So in the end, Edgeworth was just in the wrong place at the wrong time? The murder was spur-of-the-moment, and the cover-up a panicked improvisation rather than a clever attempted frame-job? I'm almost disappointed.

I broke your trunk, but what's the big deal?

Sound: Realization

Grr...

Sound: Desk Slam

L-leaving the prosecution's car aside...

Sound: Damage 2

Well, she had as much to lose as I did if the truth came out.
Sound: Light Bulb

The blackmail would have been simple, really. Just say that Goodman figured out that Ema killed Neil Marshall, and had to be silenced, and Lana better dispose of the body quietly if she didn't want the "truth" about Ema to come out.

I felt bad for having to do it.

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Realization

We never found out what the glove meant in relation to SL-9; it just got used to show that the locker was stuck unlocked when Jake Marshall opened it. Those jar fragments, though... Gant really screwed up leaving those behind. We presented that jar like 18 times today.

... Yeah...
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Well, Gant, thanks for the detailed confession, I guess?

I've got to hand it to them,

they do their jobs well... much to my dismay.
Sound: Realization

You must have known that...

Tell me, Worthy.

Why do you stand in court?

Me?
Sound: Light Bulb

You despise criminals.

Sound: Realization

!

One day you'll understand.

Oh, believe me, you will. You're just one man.

...

Oh, Udgey.

Wh-what?
Sound: Light Bulb

Sorry old friend!
Sound: Whack + Clapping

...

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

I'm sorry too, Damon Gant.
Sound: Realization

...

I knew you as you used to be, long ago.

I'm sorry to learn that

you are no longer that person.

Sound: Realization

Don't worry, you'll be fine!
Sound: Whack + Clapping

With these two around,

you can't go wrong...

In fact, I can hear them already...

Sound: Whack + Clapping

Sound: Clapping

There are two things I want you to understand.

Yes?

First, your sister never hurt anyone.

You see, Ms. Skye...

You're right.

All that I've done these past two years...

Sound: Gavel

Music: Silence

So...

I'm sorry, Ms. Skye...

I couldn't get you out of all your trouble.

...

Sound: Realization

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

I can see why Mia thought so highly of you.

What qualifies as "the top" for a defense attorney, I wonder?

Sound: Realization

Holy shit, an actual smile. The real Lana is finally free.

Music: Trial

Ms. Skye...

And to you too, Mr. Edgeworth.

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

Believe me,

I know how much of an ordeal it's been for you.

Sound: Stab

(Liar...)

And yet...

you rose above it all and guided Mr. Wright to victory.

S-stop it!
Sound: Stab

I only did my job!

Sound: Gavel

In light of this case...

Ms. Skye.

Yes, Your Honor?

You are innocent of murder. However...

A trial will be scheduled for these crimes at a later date.

Yes. I understand, Your Honor.

Sound: Realization

It's been a long time, Your Honor.

:unsmith:

Regarding the charge of murder,

this court finds the defendant, Ms. Lana Skye...

Music: Silence

Sound: Guilty x 2

Sound: Gavel

That is all. This court is adjourned!
